Santa’s Little Helper Felixstowe is a small anonymous Facebook page that was set up a few years ago after my wife and I wanted to teach our daughter about the joys and personal rewards you get from giving to others at Christmas time.
Initially it was giving out Christmas cards with scratch cards in to random people in the town that my daughter picked out. Then I was asked 3 years ago if I was able to help a family that was going through a tough time with Christmas. With the help of a few contacts (including Fruits & Flowers in town who have been supporting us from the start), we were able to fund a complete Christmas day dinner and presents. In 2014, we helped 15 families with various gifts that after receiving several requests for help.
Last year, Mandeep Birdy helped with a few ideas and leads and we branched out to get people to nominate people to receive gifts and food hampers. We received an overwhelming level of support from local businesses and wonderfully kind individuals. We delivered to over 45 individuals and families with items ranging from complete Christmas packages (food and presents), pamper sessions from various beauticians to a potted plant to an elderly lady that was feeling lonely and cut off. It was (and still is) about showing people that they are not alone, that someone cares and that they are loved very much.
The fact that we are anonymous adds to the Christmas magic and we have always felt that we don’t want or need to be recognised for this. We have seen enough of the bad side of this world to know that a little bit of good, a sprinkling of magic and a gift with love goes along way, especially at Christmas.
